Chicago Jaundice Attorney

Realizing that your baby has jaundice can be scary for any new parent. While it is important to keep in mind that infant jaundice is relatively common and usually will resolve without any necessary medical treatment, complications from jaundice can occur, and it is critical to have a doctor examine your newborn. In some cases, jaundice can result from a healthcare provider’s failure to diagnose risk factors or certain medical conditions during the pregnancy. In other serious cases where jaundice results in a serious or life-threatening condition, your doctor’s failure to properly treat your baby’s jaundice may be the cause of your child’s permanent disability.

You may be eligible to file a birth injury claim against one or more healthcare providers, and a Chicago jaundice lawyer at our firm can help.

Learning More About Infant Jaundice in Chicago

What is infant jaundice, and is it a condition that new parents should be concerned about? The Mayo Clinic explains that “infant jaundice is yellow discoloration of a newborn baby’s skin and eyes,” and it usually happens “because the baby’s blood contains an excess of bilirubin,” which is “a yellow pigment of red blood cells.”

Jaundice occurs relatively frequently in newborns, especially when a baby is born prematurely. In most cases where jaundice occurs after the baby has been born following 35 weeks or more of gestation, the newborn will be able to recover fully. However, in some cases, especially in a particularly premature newborn, jaundice can become severe and can lead to other conditions that may result in permanent brain damage.

Common Symptoms of Jaundice in Chicago After Childbirth

The most common symptoms of jaundice are usually a yellowing of the baby’s skin or a yellowing of the whites of the baby’s eyes. If your newborn shows signs of jaundice, you should see a doctor.

Even when symptoms are not present, babies should be assessed for jaundice during the first week after birth, and all newborns should routinely be assessed for signs of jaundice every 12 hours following childbirth.

Complications and Injuries Resulting from Jaundice in Chicago

The following are dangerous complications that can result from jaundice, according to the Mayo Clinic:

  • Acute bilirubin encephalopathy, which can result in permanent brain damage; and
  • Kernicterus, which can lead to hearing loss, athetoid cerebral palsy, and other developmental problems.
